Perris Valley group to discuss parole of child killer
into Good Hope on Monday

The Perris Valley Municipal Advisory Council on Monday night will discuss state officials’ plans to parole a child murderer with no link to Riverside County into an area outside Perris.

In 1988 at the age of 17, Donald Schmidt sexually assaulted and brutally murdered a 3-year-old in Santa Cruz County, drowning the defenseless girl in a bathtub while the girl’s mother was out of the room. Even though Schmidt, 38, has never been in Riverside County and has no ties to the community, state parole officials indicate he could be paroled to Good Hope by August.

The Perris Valley Municipal Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at the Perris Senior Center, 100 North Perris Boulevard.

Authorities expect the crowd to number several hundred, so Perris officials have arranged to have the meeting moved to the nearby Bob Glass Gymnasium if that become necessary.

Local elected officials – including Riverside County Supervisors Marion Ashley and Jeff Stone, and District Attorney Rod Pacheco – are fighting the state’s parole plan for Schmidt.  On Tuesday morning, the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider a resolution opposing Schmidt’s parole to Riverside County. Also to be considered are proposed ordinances that could at least temporarily restrict the location and operations of parole homes in the county.
