The City’s Youth Advisory Committee is hosting a video game tournament, summer barbecue and school-supply giveaway at the Perris Teen Center on Aug. 7.
The free event takes place beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Teen Center, 100 North D Street.
Sabrina Chavez, the City’s liaison with the Youth Advisory Committee, said the upcoming activities serve several purposes. They highlight some of the state-of-the-art technology --including a recording studio, computers, big-screen televisions and video games—available at the site. It’s a chance for students 11 to 17-years-old to take part in an Xbox One tournament featuring Madden (a video football game) and Just Dance.
And it will give free backpacks, notebooks and other school supplies to students who need them.
“School supplies are expensive,” Chavez said. “This is an opportunity for the City and our Youth Advisory Committee to give back to the community.”
Since its inception in 2013, members of the Youth Advisory Committee have undertaken several activities in support of City efforts, including a community clean-up, participation at Perris parades and “Live Well Perris” events that emphasize healthy eating and active living. YAC member Martin Medrano, 17, a senior at Rancho Verde High School, said the experience has provided valuable lessons and insights into the workings of the City while earning praise from Perris residents.
“We are always thanked for our help art every City event,” Medrano said.
