Applications are now being accepted for teenagers wishing to serve on the City of Perris’s Youth Advisory Committee.
Application forms may be downloaded from the City’s website. Completed applications must be returned by May 2.
YAC members volunteer at a variety of Perris community activities and in the process, learn more about the workings of local government while helping bring about positive changes to their community. Community-improvement projects have included removing blight and trash from vacant lots, planting landscaping, supporting City events like Snow Day, Strut Your Mutt and the annual Health Fair.
The committee is open to middle and high school students, 13 to 18 years-old, who can attend meetings on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Committee members also work weekend events, attend special functions within Perris or other locations and must complete mandatory professional development classes.
Rancho Verde High School junior Jacqueline Reliford serves as vice-president of the YAC.
“It’s a really good program,” said Jacqueline, 16, who hopes to earn a degree in education at UCLA in college. “It teaches teen-agers how to dress professionally, collaborate with others and gain confidence.”
Jacqueline displayed some of that confidence this week when she addressed the City Council about the application process.
Interested teenagers may join the YAC as a Representative or Member at Large.
Representatives must reside in Perris, have at least a 3.0 grade point average and serve a one-year term. They have voting rights on the committee and may become an officer within the organization. YAC members are sworn in by the City Clerk.
Member at Large are not sworn in, have no voting rights and cannot hold a YAC officer position. These members do not have to be residents of the City of Perris but they must meet the age requirements and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
Individuals who wish to join the YAC must complete the application, submit it by the listed due date and successfully complete the required interviews and one parent meeting. Incomplete applications will be returned. Applications must be typed. Handwritten applications will not be accepted. Completed applications may be dropped off at the Perris Teen Center 100 North D. Street.
