In attendance for the grand opening of Plaza de Perris were City of Perris Mayor Michael M. Vargas, Mayor Pro Tem Marisela Magaña, Council Member Rita Rogers, Council Member David Starr Rabb, Council Member Malcolm Corona, Former Perris Council Member Tonya Burke, Perris City Manager Richard Belmudez, Assistant City Manager Clara Miramontes, Assistant City Manager Isabel Carlos, City of Perris Director of Community Services Sabrina Chavez, Interim Director of Administrative Services Saida Amozgar, Perris City Engineer Stuart McKibben and representatives from Assembly Member Jose Medina’s office of the 61st District and representatives from the office of Senator Richard Roth of the 31st district.

Additionally, Patrick Wood and Matt Bush from Wood Investment Companies Inc’s executive team, as well as other members of the investment company who worked on the project, were in attendance.

Assistant City Manager Clara Miramontes opened the ceremony by commending Wood Investments and City Staff for completing the project in such quick time.

“A year ago, in August 2019, we broke ground on this project and it was just a pile of dirt,” said Miramontes. “But with the efforts of City Staff and our investors, along with the support of the City Council, this project was completed within a year. It’s quite an accomplishment that we are very proud of.”

According to Miramontes, this project has been the catalyst for business expansion and economic development within the City of Perris.

Discussions about the project began in 2016 and Mayor Michael M. Vargas echoed how timing of projects like this one is something he wanted to address as mayor.

“This is amazing to see this project come to fruition in such a short time and here we are opening just one year after breaking ground,” said Vargas. “It is exciting for our city and we want people to know Perris is a great community to do business.”

Mayor Pro Tem Marisela Magaña expressed her appreciation to the staff for all their efforts.

“I am so excited to have this shopping center right here in our own back yard,” said Magaña. “I home everyone comes out and does some shopping here in our city.”

Council Member Rita Rogers recalled the initial conversations about this shopping center and was glad to see this project completed for the community.

“Three years ago we had a whirlwind of a day where we visited with all these new business to look at this vision for this shopping center,” said Rogers. “The vision was that Perris would be a hub of economic growth and this is the next step in that vision.”

Council Member David Starr Rabb echoed the sentiments of appreciation to investors and Team Perris.

Said Rabb, “It’s amazing how quickly this project turned around and in perfect timing before the holiday shopping season as well. Our staff, investors and all of Team Perris did a wonderful job with this program.”

Council Member Malcolm Corona remembered when business closed in Perris and was grateful to have a place for the community to do local shopping again.

“It’s a great day here in Perris and anyone who has lived in Perris remembers when businesses would close in this city and we had to travel to other cities to spend our money and do our shopping,” recalled Corona. “I am proud to shop here in Perris and I know our community is too.”

City Manager Richard Belmudez acknowledged Miramontes, the investors, and Team Perris for seeing this project through, just as promised three years ago.

“Thank you for all doing what you said you would do and for investing in this community,” said Belmudez. “It’s a great day and we should all go shopping!”

Matthew Bush of Wood Investments Companies Inc. was the project manager for Plaza de Perris and was honored to be in attendance.

“It takes a long time for these projects to complete and all the stars to align,” said Bush. “But in this case, the stars aligning were the city of Perris and it’s staff. It has been a joy to work with you on this project.”

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the expansion included the openings of Burlington, Ross Dress For Less, Ulta Beauty, Five Below, and Hibbett Sports, with construction underway or beginning soon on businesses such as Mountain Mike's Pizza, Jersey Mike's Subs, Chick-Fil-A and Planet Fitness.

Initial discussions are also underway for potential renovations to the Regency Theater. The retail synergy has acted as a catalyst for shopping center development throughout the City, providing only more evidence that Perris is the place to be.
