Backflow Prevention Banner

The City of Perris is committed to diligently delivering safe and reliable drinking water to its customers. This effort begins with protecting our water supply sources – such as groundwater wells – and continues through the entire treatment and distribution process until the water reaches the meter. However, some hazardous conditions may exist on customer properties, which risks the safe drinking water supply.

WHAT ARE CROSS-CONNECTIONS?
WHAT DOES A BACKFLOW DEVICE DO?

Annual Backflow Testing

The State of California requires backflow devices to be tested for proper operation annually. The City of Perris notifies owners of testing requirements each year; a list of certified testers acceptable to the State is included with the notice. Failure to correct any deficiencies and demonstrate passing results is a cause for potential cross-connections and may result in the termination of water services. Our request complies with City’s Municipal Code (1972, § 14.10.080; Ord. No. 1196, § 2(part), 2006), which states that upon the city’s determination that a clear and immediate hazard to the city’s approved water supply exists, the city shall make a reasonable effort to advise the involved responsible owner or water user of the necessity for and its intent to, immediately discontinue/terminate water service.

While single-family residences are not generally required to have a backflow device, you can help prevent backflow contamination in the following ways:

  • DO NOT leave hoses attached or submerged in unsafe water such as fertilizer or cleaning solution.
  • Confirm that anti-siphon type irrigation valves are installed on irrigation valves.
  • Install a hose bib vacuum breaker. Please note that most new homes are already equipped with anti-siphon faucets.
