What is Emergency Management?
Emergency Management is a coordinated and organized effort to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from an emergency. Emergency management seeks to promote a safer, less vulnerable community with the capacity to cope with hazards and disasters. An “emergency” includes all kinds of natural and man-made events that adversely affect the lives and property of the community.
The Four Phases for Emergency Management
Mitigation: Preventing future emergencies or minimizing their effects
- This phase includes actions taken to prevent or reduce the cause, impact, and consequences of disasters.
Preparedness: Preparing to handle an emergency
- This phase includes planning, training, and educational activities for events that cannot be mitigated.
Response: Responding safely to an emergency
- This phase occurs in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. During this phase, businesses and other operations do not function normally.
Recovery: Recovering from an emergency
- During this phase, restoration efforts happen together with regular operations and activities.
