(Under this adopted map, the Mayor will continue to serve at-large, and District 2 and District 4 will be up for election in November 2024)
The City of Perris launched a community outreach effort in Fall 2021 to generate feedback from residents about how it elects its City Council. Included in this effort were two workshops, one virtual and one in-person. The district elections community engagement virtual meeting was held on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at 6 p.m. The district elections community engagement in-person meeting was held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
At the City Council Meeting on September 28, 2021, the Perris City Council voted to 3-2 to proceed with the district elections process. After two hearings to receive feedback from the community, the process now moves to the map drawing phase.
Currently, the City Council consists of a directly elected Mayor and four Council Members who serve in four equally populated districts. A candidate must reside within an election district to be eligible to run for that Council seat.
The final map was chosen after a six month-long process that involved a comprehensive public outreach campaign and consideration of four different maps submitted by the City’s demographer, Bear Demographics and Research. At the City Council Meeting held on March 8, 2022, the City Council officially and unanimously adopted the second reading of Ordinance Number 1415.
Beginning with the November 2022 election, the city will be divided into four districts, and voters in Districts 1 and 3 will elect a City Councilmember who lives in their district. Voters in Districts 2 and 4 will elect a City Councilmember at the November 2024 election. The Mayor will continue to be elected at-large by all voters in the City of Perris.
