SB 1383: MANDATORY ORGANICS RECYCLING
Recycling is good for the environment and the well-being of everyone in the City of Stanton. Importantly, it is required by State law! In 2016 Governor Brown signed into law SB 1383 establishing methane emissions reduction targets in a statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP). The targets must reduce organic waste disposal by 75% and recover at least 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025. To learn more, please visit www.calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
All businesses, schools, and single-family and multi-family residences are required to:
- Subscribe to recycling and organics collection service through CR&R, Incorporated.
- Source-separate trash, recycle, and organic materials into the designated containers. To learn more, visit “What goes in my container”.
- Create an internal organics and recycling program for employees, contractors, tenants, and customers where:
- Access to an adequate number, size, and location (indoor/outdoor) of containers is available.
- Containers are color-coded in the following color scheme: gray/black for trash, blue for recycling, and green for organics.
- Annually, educational information is provided on how to properly sort the three (3) waste streams into the correct containers (new tenants must be provided with this information within 14 days of move-in).
- Containers are periodically inspected, and employees are informed if contaminants are found.

Edible Food Recovery
COMMERCIAL EDIBLE FOOD RECOVERY PROGRAM
SB 1383 requires Commercial Edible Food Generators (CEFGs) to donate the maximum amount of surplus food to a Food Recovery Organization. Commercial Edible Food Generators are classified into two groups: Tier 1 Generators and Tier 2 Generators.
EXAMPLES OF TIER 1 GENERATORS:
Supermarkets with revenue ≥ $2 million.
- Grocery Stores with Facilities ≥ 10,000 sq. ft.
- Food Service Providers
- Food Distributors
- Wholesale Food Vendors
EXAMPLES OF TIER 2 GENERATORS:
Restaurants with Facilities ≥ 5,000 sq. ft. or 250+ seats
- Hotels with an On-Site Food Facility and 200+ Rooms
- Health Facilities with an On-Site Food Facility and 100+ Beds
- Large Venues and Events
- State Agency Cafeterias with Facilities ≥ 5,000 sq. ft. or 250+ seats
- Local Education Agency with an on-site Food Facility
- Non-Local Entities
- Food Pantries
- Maintain a contract or written agreement with a Food Recovery Organization.
- Maintain record of donations indicating all types of food being donated in pounds per month, frequency of donations, and contact information of contracted Food Recovery Organizations utilized.
