What is an LHMP?

A Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) is a strategic document developed by municipalities to identify and assess potential risks posed by natural disasters and other emergencies within their jurisdiction. It outlines proactive measures to reduce the vulnerability of communities to such hazards, including infrastructure improvements, land use regulations, and public education initiatives. These plans serve as blueprints for coordinated responses and resource allocation during crises, aiming to minimize loss of life, property damage, and economic disruption.

Why have an LHMP?

An LHMP is crucial for communities as it helps anticipate and mitigate the impact of natural disasters and other emergencies. By systematically identifying risks and implementing preemptive measures, such as infrastructure upgrades and public awareness campaigns, communities can minimize the severity of potential disasters. Ultimately, these plans enhance resilience, safeguarding lives, property, and the economic stability of the area.

What hazards are identified in the LHMP?

The LHMP identified the following hazards within the City of Perris jurisdiction:

  • Fire
  • Flood
  • Earthquake
  • Severe Weather
  • Dam Failure
  • Drought

What can I do now to be better prepared for disasters?

To better prepare for disasters, utilize your local hazard mitigation plan (LHMP) as a valuable tool. Firstly, familiarize yourself with the risks outlined in the LHMP specific to your area and understand the recommended mitigation strategies. Secondly, actively participate in community initiatives aligned with the LHMP, such as emergency preparedness workshops and drills, to enhance your readiness and resilience. The City of Perris occasionally hosts trainings such as CERT, Active Shooter, and LISTOS and advertise registrations via social media. Community members are encouraged to participate to hone their disaster preparedness skills and knowledge. Finally, do not forget to check out the Additional Resources provided below.
